WHO ARE THE RISING SONS?

Rising Sons ATX.jpg

TEXAS ROCK FUSED WITH COSMIC SOUTHERN SOUL...

Hailing from the live music capital of the world, Austin Texas, the Rising Sons are one of the most promising acts to come around in a while. The band already has a buzz brewing, yet has just started to dip it’s toe outside of Austin.

Born from a love of the music from the late 1960s, 1970s, and the 1990s, from the desperation blues of Muddy and the Wolf, to the soul of Otis Redding and Sly, to the sweaty British rock and roll stomp of Humble Pie and the Stones, to country-rock landscapes painted by the Eagles and Gram Parsons, the Rising Sons deliver timeless music that pulls from all of those threads, creating a sound that is new yet missed like a long lost friend, now on your doorstep.

Formed by guitarist and lead vocalist Jake Sherard and Billy Slater, the band started as a cover band, playing songs by Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Levon Helm, and others. The band went through a few members before bringing in bassist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Matt Temple and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist David Hunter-Thacker, solidifying the current line-up.

The band has been playing residency shows in North Austin as well as select shows at hand-picked venues in Austin and beyond. Throughout these performances, the band electrifies the audience with it’s original material and unique versions of covers. From songs like the rock and roll epic “Long Time Ago” to the blues filtered through a Louisiana swamp of “Swampass”, to the road song celebration of “Wanna See You Smile”, the band’s songs are not another nod to the classic and timeless sounds of yesteryear but a return to the honest truths and rusted fables of tried and true themes that affect all of us. Like running into an old friend, these songs take you on journeys back to the heady days of being young and free, yet remind you of the roads you have traveled. The band is recently had a session at  Hidden Creek studios with an EP going to be released by the end of 2023.

Look for the Rising Sons to bring it's unique blend of Cosmic Southern Soul Music to your eyes and ears!

Billy Slater_edited.jpg

Meet Billy Slater

Growing up in the suburban neighborhood of Newbury Park, California, Billy Slater had access to music at a young age. First discovering his love of music and drumming after seeing KISS on TV in 1976, his mother made a mission of exposing her son to many artists from many different genres. Starting with Little Richard, moving to the Beatles and the Stones, to Elton John and Alice Cooper, and onward, there was never a shortage of sounds coming from his stereo speakers.

Billy, who started playing drums at age 6, is a passionate musician who plays everything that’s not a brass or woodwind instrument. An avid music historian, he loves the rural blues of Mississippi, shoegaze dreampop of England, the soul of Motown, and rock and roll of 1960s London and his record collection and songwriting speaks to this. He has shared stages and studios with many national and local artists, including the Foo Fighters, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, the London Suede, Jimmy Vaughn, Tomar and the FCs, Soul Man Sam Evans, Brian Scartocci, Plastiscene, and many more. He has also worked with many world renown engineers and producers including Rich Costey, Ben Grosse, Bill Cooper, and the late Richard Podolor.

Billy brings a unique style of musicality to his playing with Rising Sons. While influenced by drumming powerhouses like John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Jimmy Chamberlin, he also remains true to playing to the song and doing so dynamically. He has left an imprint on every project he is involved in, and remains a very much in demand musician around the Austin music scene where he now calls home.
